Everyone may look at this list a little differently and certainly prioritize it in different ways, but regardless of whether you would add, subtract, or replace items on this list for yourself, it takes a high level of intention and discipline to complete the various goals presented here.
Jim Rohn observed, “if you work hard at your job you can make a living, but if you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune.”
I don’t think of fortune in terms of ‘lots of money’, but more in terms of a highly successful life. It is easy to work hard at your job everyday. Most of the time you have others holding you to a high level of accountability and you ‘hear about it’ when things aren’t going well. In this environment you tend to develop disciplines (or perceived disciplines, really pain avoidance) without even realizing you’re doing it. You just want to get the job done and keep everyone happy or maybe even impress others to move up in the ranks.
Self Development and growth requires a different approach and is very unique. You don’t have someone standing over your shoulder ensuring the work is getting done. Most of us simply aren’t accustomed to developing plans and executing strategies in an environment that relies solely on ourselves for completion and success. This can feel overwhelming and ultimately lead to avoidance.
The worst thing you can do is continue to put it off. Start today. Choose something that you’ve been putting off and just do it. Set a small goal and work to achieve consistency in that area for a week, or a month. Once you’ve achieved success, add on the next item, and the next, and so on…
Remember, we’re not kids anymore and we don’t just grow and get taller and stronger with each passing year. We have to be intentional and stay disciplined!.
Have a great day!
